A fitness model, like other types of models, is paid to promote clothing, products, and brands. What makes them different from other models is that the clothing, products, and brands they’re modeling for are in the fitness and health/wellness industries. They are often used to promote things like fitness/health supplements and fitness equipment, and are often used in gym membership commercials. Fitness models also often compete in competitions where they are judged on their physique.

In this realm of modeling, height is less of a sticking point than it is for fashion modeling, but physical fitness is a non-negotiable for most brands. Due to the nature of the brands and products fitness models are used to promote, having a physically fit body with defined muscle tone is a top necessity. When it comes to modeling in competitions, there are different categories, such as Bodybuilding, Physique, and Figure, that have slightly different body type requirements.


Getting into fitness modeling is very similar to getting into other modeling genres. While freelance fitness modeling is possible, many modeling agencies have a fitness division, and some focus solely on representing only fitness models. Agency representation is one of the best ways to get bookings with fitness brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor. As with the other types of modeling, fitness modeling is highly competitive, and it takes hard work and dedication to establish yourself. Strong posing skills and a good modeling portfolio are essential for getting bookings and finding success in the industry.
